Default Wtb commission contest *got idea from Sectus*

Well, hello everyone and thank you for being interested in this thread. I have been playing for awhile and have been using guru for quite awhile but never actually browsed in this forum. But I'm glad that I did because I have found many talented artists here. After reading a few pages of threads, I came to love the idea that Spectus had. So here I am, I wish to borrow this idea to recruit talented artists to work on a few of my characters.

I realize that many artists here are still busy working on current projects as well as the one on Spectus thread. However, I'm throwing this out now so the artists can plan ahead. The contest official start date is probably May 1st. The end date is June 21st, 2007.

The participants will draw 3 out of 9 characters in one picture for the first prize set. In the case that there are over 30 participants, I will include the second prize set. The picture for the second prize set needs to be a different one. For this one, you can draw as little as 1 character or as much as all 9, that will be up to you. Here are the characters:

1) Dervish -- http://img175.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dervishfj3.jpg
extra dervish pic: http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?i...hdetailbs2.jpg

2-3) Ele and Paragon -- http://img225.imageshack.us/my.php?i...paragonds3.jpg
extra ele pic: http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?i...edetailxd0.jpg
extra paragon pic: http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?i...ndetailkh7.jpg

4-5) Monk and Mesmer -- http://img225.imageshack.us/my.php?i...dmesmerxz7.jpg
extra monk pic: http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?i...kdetailfr3.jpg
extra mesmer pic: http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?i...rdetailrl9.jpg

6-7) Necro and Ritualist -- http://img225.imageshack.us/my.php?i...tualistry8.jpg
extra necro pic: http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?i...odetailqh7.jpg
extra ritualist pic: http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?i...tdetailns4.jpg

8) Warrior -- http://img225.imageshack.us/my.php?i...warrioryd1.jpg
extra warrior pic: http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?i...rdetailpc4.jpg

9) additional Ranger -- http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rangermn4.jpg

The pose, expression, place I leave to the taste of the artist. The art style will be up to the artist. You don't need to have a full body picture. However, the armor will be specific to fow armor and weapons will be torment if it is to be incorporated in the picture. If you need to know what they look like, you can see it on wiki. http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Category:Tormented_items

Now there will be 10 winners:
10th: 2 ectos or 15k
9th: 3 ectos or 20k
8th: 4 ectos or 30k
7th: 5 ectos or 35k
6th: 6 ectos or 45k
5th: 7 ectos or 50k
4th: 8 ectos or 60k
3rd: 9 ectos or 65k
2nd: 15 ectos or 115k
1st: As a person who likes fow armor, I too will grant this to the winner. The first prize winner will win 120 ectos and 120 shards and 75k. You can choose to get fow armor or do whatever with that. That will be up to you. Please note for the prizes from 2nd to 9th, it is or, not and. So you will get a choice of the ectos or the cash. Seeing that the prices of ectos will vary, that's why I left the cash option. If by any chance, there is more than 30 participants, I will include a second set of prizes.

10th: 1 gem set
9th: 2 gem sets
8th: 3 gem sets
7th: 4 gem sets
6th: 5 gem sets
5th: 6 gem sets
4th: 7 gem sets
3rd: 8 gem sets
2nd: 9 gem sets
1st: armbrace, ^^ orrrrrrrr 15 of each gems (I say you take the armbrace if you want the torment weapon so that you don't have to trade the armbrace yourself)

For the first prize set, voting will be split into 2 parts. 50% will be on the forum community and the other 50% will be based on a point system by me and my friends. For the second prize set, it will be judge by me.

Participants can send in as many entries as they want but they can't win more than 1 prize. That is, they have to tell me which prize set they are aiming for or if they want to enter 2 entries for each prize set separately, that's fine too. For contact info if you have a lot of questions and don't want to spam the forum, please pm me in game or email me or pm me in forum.

Oh wow. I will definitely try to enter this, as I don't have FoW armor for any of my characters.

One request, could you have images of the characters from the back as well? Just so we don't need to start playing with the character generator to see how their hair/armor goes in the back. Thanks.

Nice set of prizes there. You might want to consider setting the start date after ours, as that way the artists here wont be diluted between two contests and the overall response will be greater. It also allows you to judge the level of response you're likely to get.

It's entirely up to you of course, but if I recall someone ran a contest at the same time as Sectus's last time and the response to theirs was less as many were already working on Sectus's.

Anyway, best of luck

Well, May 1st is around the corner, so I'm bumping this up. Many nice entries for Sectus/Shan contest, I hope that you guys still have energy for another round of contest after them.

Anyway, if there seems to be an active participation (more than 30), I will include a second set of prize likeeeeeee:
10th: 1 gem set
9th: 2 gem sets
8th: 3 gem sets
7th: 4 gem sets
6th: 5 gem sets
5th: 6 gem sets
4th: 7 gem sets
3rd: 8 gem sets
2nd: 9 gem sets
1st: armbrace, ^^ orrrrrrrr 15 of each gems (I say you take the armbrace if you want the torment weapon so that you don't have to trade the armbrace yourself)
If you don't know what gems are, it's margonite, stygians, torments, and titans. The second prize set will be my personal choice of which picture is the best from 1st to 10th. The picture for the second prize will have to be different from the first. The requirement will still be fow armor and torment weapons. However, you can draw 1 to 9 chars, it's not limited to 3.

So, if you're up for the challenge, enter. You might be the winner of a new fow set and torment weapon, ^^. Well, or however you want to spend your ectos and gems.

I think I'm in... just a couple of questions first. One thing that kind of bothers me is that we have to email you to get the pictures. What if an artist decides at the last minute to switch some character they're drawing? I think it'd be nice to have all the screenies in this thread, so it's possible to think things over a bit better.

Also, will you be checking your PM here in the forums, since you only specified email and in-game PM as a way to contact you? I think if the contest is hosted on a forum, you should also have the possibility to enter completely in the forum without needing to resort to outside communication.

Oh, and it would be nice to have some kind of deadline already, like say, a month or six weeks from now. Otherwise it's kind of easy to just forget about a contest and then come back a couple of weeks from now and see that whups, the deadline is set for the day after. Some artists generally do their work on the last minute, or draw out their works bit by bit if they're busy in real life, so having a deadline (even if you will be extending it later) will give a kind of a rough idea when they have to be ready.

Great contest idea though, I'll be looking forward to seeing what people come up with!

I agree about having a deadline. Even if you're not sure of it you should decide on a deadline already because people tend to not work properly if no deadline is set. I often find myself in trouble with schoolwork if a deadline is not properly announced because I just never work on anything that doesn't have a deadline since I usually have a lot of other important things to do that have deadlines and just completelly forget about things that don't. It's easier to aim at a dline than something vaguely in the future.

I will try and participate because I guess I'm a bit of a contest nut...always gots to compete and yees munney<3. My artistic juices are running out though. I have not drawn so much in such a short time for a very long time and I think I'm even starting to level up again which is good but I'm sure to face a wall with drawing at some point. *Been working on 4 commish and other projects behind the scenes* Nice to have good ref!

And one last question, you want three characters drawn in one pic but are we allowed to add more if we feel like it?

Hi there,

I hope this new contest brings out some more amazing art. I loved most of the pieces submmited for the mesmer contest.

Something has been in my mind since I first saw your post, and I want to make very clear that I am not an artist, I am completely incapable of drawing anything more than a stick figure, and even in that case, it will be out of proportion.

You are offering an incredible amount of goodies, and that's awesome!!!
but it seems to me there's such a huge difference between first and second price, that perhaps it might discourage some artists, who might feel they don't stand a chance.

You are requesting that they draw not 1 but 3 characters, and that's a lot of work. I don't know, but if I came in second I would be devastated. So close and yet so far away. It's like if you win you win a Rolls and if you are second, you get this really cool mountain bike.

Maybe the people that are actually going to draw completely disagree with me, and I will for sure not say another word, but I think it would be more appealing to distribute those amazing goodies a little bit more evenly, and definitely add more possibe winners of some sort.

Very talented people will go out of their way and put a lot of work for a very slim chance of getting a very big reward. Whoever gets it will be super thrilled, but maybe the rest will be super disappointed.

Your second set of prices seems a lot more even, although we know the armbrace still goes for 100K + 100 ectos give or take.

It just seems to me, and it's definitely an opinion, that you might get a much better response but giving out more prices, and overall better ones since you definitely have the resources. With 100 ectos you can make 5 people super happy by giving them 20... or something like that.

First price should definitely be higher than the rest, but if I am not like amazingly talented I'm just not sure I would not feel nervous about putting all the effort and time that you are asking of these guys.

hmmm...this sounds very tempting
Well If I find some spare time, I'm deffinetly gonna participate in this contest, but for such a high prizes an image must be very good, and that takes time...
Anyhow GL to all contestents, and have loads of fun

I dont think Its so bad, the prices are Big, specially as Dont Mess just pointed out, the first price. I actually think its a good thing the first price is better than the rest, since people entering contests should be trying to do their best to get to first place. That price should be a good incentive for people to try harder.

I mean in races all participants want to get in first place isnt it? ( and still 115k+15ectos is very good)

Also I want to add, setting a deadline would be nice, I really dont like deadlines being extended over and over, and having no deadline doesnt sound very good. I mean... at least as I see it, extending deadlines ( or not having one set) is not fair for the ones that woked hard to get in on time.

Personally, I don't mind the difference. The second place prize is still awesome and having first place so high just makes me want to put a little more effort into reaching it.

I can understand your concern, though. Three characters is quite a lot and will take some time to draw. Still, for me the nice thing about competitions is that they're not obligatory and I enjoy the challenge of getting any prize. If it's too much work and interferes with my daily life, then I won't do it. But if I have the time to spend I will gladly give my best to get the first/second/third/eleventh place, even if the prizes aren't that high.
First place/second place prizes are enough to get me started on drawing, and then the pure enjoyment of competition takes care of the rest.

I concur! Because the first prize is simply awesome so it would be blasphemy to downscale it. Other than that I do understand the reasoning but ofcourse I never 'aim' at any other spots then the first in a contest myself. Not that I thought I could win(because my ego is the size of Mt.Himalaja no?) but just because, always aim at the top yarr!

I do believe however that Sectus' and Shan's contest was a big success because they also organized it well along with great prizes. They had good refrence, clear rules, they knew what they wanted and they weren't very picky about style or what was drawn and just let everyone 'freely' do their own thing.

Fair enough!!! You are the ones drawing, and the ones who are investing time and effort, and if this works, then awesome.

Somebody is gonna look real sexy on FOW armor

I'm gonna sit back and keep enjoying the amazing works of so many truly talented artists. I wish ALL of you the best of lucks!
